This thread is for a personal friend, A new Witch who has been a wee bit misinformed on some things. There so many books and TV shows and wrong info out there that I am dedicating this information in her honor that maybe it will go out into the universe and help other New Witches.
Gerald Brousseau Gardner (June 13, 1884 - February 12, 1964),
, who sometimes used the craft name Scire, was an influential English Wiccan, as well as an amateur anthropologist and archaeologist, writer, weaponry expert and occultist. He was instrumental in bringing the Neopagan religion of Wicca to public attention in Britain and wrote some of its definitive religious texts. He himself typically referred to the faith as "witchcraft" or "the witch-cult",[1] its adherents "the Wica",[2] and he claimed that it was the survival of a pre-Christian pagan Witch cult that he had been initiated into by a New Forest coven in 1939.
Gardner spent much of his life abroad in southern and south-eastern Asia, where he developed an interest in many of the native peoples, and wrote about some of their magical practices. It was after his retirement and return to England that he was initiated into Wicca by the New Forest coven. Subsequently fearing that this religion, which he apparently believed to be a genuine continuance of ancient beliefs, would die out, he set about propagating it through initiating others, mainly through the Bricket Wood coven, and introduced a string of notable High Priestesses into Wicca, including Doreen Valiente, Lois Bourne, Patricia Crowther and Eleanor Bone. He would go on to develop his own variant of the Craft that has come to be named after him, Gardnerian Wicca, which combined the teachings that he had received from the New Forest coven with additional ideas taken from a number of disparate sources, including Freemasonry, ceremonial magic, mediaeval grimoires and the writings of the occultist Aleister Crowley, a man whom Gardner knew personally.
He also published two books on the subject of Wicca, Witchcraft Today (1954) and The Meaning of Witchcraft (1959), along with a couple of novels, and ran the Museum of Magic and Witchcraft on the Isle of Man, which was devoted to the subject. For this, he has left an enduring legacy on the modern Wiccan and Neopagan movement, and is frequently referred to as "the Father of Wicca
Wicca the practise and religion is only a little over 50yrs old..
Witchcraft is very old its a practice and belief and birth rite of females. Women because we are the life bringers and midwives and healers. We are usually grounded but very passionate and aware of the magicks around us. We do not go by a REDE. But intent and purpose.. Divination, conjuration,Spells, manipulation of energy and focus for the greater good. Witchcraft is neither evil or good because nature is not. Magick comes from the heart of the Witch so if the Witch has issues so will her castings. Witches will more likely use homeopathic remedy's. Usually have more animals in there yard then anyone on the entire block. LOL
I personally have 3, Raccoons 2, Squirrel and about 3 bright red cardnals.animals are attracted to peace and the home and hearth of balance. My journey through life and the heartache I have had makes me the person I am today and how I choose to use that knowledge makes me the Witch I am. Witches hardly ever use divination tools "That is the choice of the individual Witch" not the rules. Because the balance of my life has been off I have been using the Tarot deck to help focus my eye. when people asks for readings. But it is in no way required.
Not every Witch will have an active power that is a myth. But all Witches will have a more hightened awareness of there environment. Because we choose to and usually are not bound by fears that religions has taught. Men can be witches but they usually are never as aware for some odd reason. My Granny taught me its because men are created to be food gatherers and bear wrestlers LOL. Women are created to give life and teach young the morals and laws of the earth. Together we become a perfect complete being. Blessed be and if anyone has any questions be sure to leave it on the board or send me a message. Blessed be
